Tested in Two alpine climbing trips in the North Cascades and a ski mountaineering objective in the Cascades' Central zone

Black Diamond Beta Light 30: The Thinking Person's Alpine Pack

The pack alpine objectives demand. Don't buy it for anything else.

Pros

  • + Technical attachment points that function in real conditions
  • + Exceptional weight for a structured alpine pack
  • + Compresses flat when empty
  • + A-frame and diagonal ski carry both work

Cons

  • Minimal organization — one main compartment and a top pocket
  • Overspecced for non-technical use
  • Hip belt minimal by design — not a load-haul pack

What Makes It Technical

Ice axe loops and crampon straps that actually work when your hands are cold. A rope strap on the top lid for glacier travel. Ski carry compatibility — not the half-measure kind, but a full A-frame and diagonal carry system. Side compression straps that keep the load snug when you're scrambling. None of this adds meaningful weight because none of it is overbuilt.

The 30L Sweet Spot

Thirty liters is the right size for a long summit day or a fast-and-light overnight on technical terrain. Enough room for crampons, a harness, rope systems, bivy gear, and emergency layers. Not so large that you're hauling air.
